Everything you need to know about Tamil Nadu Climate Education Initiative

The Climate Education Initiative is a state-led program designed to build environmental awareness, foster climate literacy, and empower the next generation and educators to take meaningful climate action through interactive competitions, field experiences, and specialized training.

The initiative is open to school students and teachers across all districts in the state. Specific eligibility criteria vary depending on the component (Quiz, Nature Camp, or Teacher Training).

It is an intensive, three-day capacity-building program designed to equip school teachers with advanced knowledge, pedagogy, and resources to effectively integrate climate change education into regular classroom curriculam.

Schools and colleges can register through the official portal or contact the program coordinators. Once registered, institutions will receive guidance, training resources, and support to start and manage Climate Action Clubs effectively.

The program is ideal for Science, Social Science, and Geography teachers, as well as Eco-Club coordinators. Applicants should have a keen interest in driving environmental initiatives within their schools.

The quiz is open to school students from registered government, government-aided, and private schools. Usually, students from Classes 6 to 9 are eligible.

Schools can register their teams directly through this portal. School administrators or nominated teachers can log in, navigate to the Quiz Registration tab, and enter the students' details.

The quiz is conducted in three progressive stages:
1. District Level: Online/Written preliminary rounds.
2. Zonal Level: Zonal knock-out rounds for district winners.
3. State Level Grand Finale: A live, competitive stage quiz featuring the top regional teams.

The questions will focus on climate change basics, renewable energy, biodiversity, conservation efforts, waste management, and state-specific environmental policies and initiatives.

The Nature Camps aim to connect students directly with ecosystems, forests, and wildlife habitats in their respective districts. It provides hands-on learning about local biodiversity, conservation challenges, and the tangible impacts of climate change.

Participants are typically nominated by their schools based on interest, academic engagement in environmental sciences, or performance in local eco-club activities.

No. The Nature Camp is a fully sponsored initiative by the department, covering travel, food, and guided field modules for selected students and accompanying teachers.

Student safety is our top priority. All camps are conducted in collaboration with local forest and environmental authorities, accompanied by certified guides, teachers, and medical first-aid personnel.

It is an intensive, three-day capacity-building program designed to equip school teachers with advanced knowledge, pedagogy, and resources to effectively integrate climate change education into regular classroom curricula.

Teachers who successfully complete the entire residency and pass the final evaluation will receive a formal Climate Education Professional Certification issued by the department in collaboration with our technical knowledge partners.

The training is a 3-day residential program held at designated state training institutes or partner university campuses. Lodging and boarding are fully provided.

Currently, registration for the Quiz and Teacher Training components must be routed through recognized educational institutions. Independent student applications are not accepted at this stage.
